The association Wiechert’sche Erdbebenwarte Göttingen e.V.
… rescue from the wrecking ball!
The establishment of the association “Wiechert’sche Erdbebenwarte Göttingen e.V.” is owed to an outcry! An outcry was sparked in 2004, when it was announced that the entire site, including all buildings and fully functional measuring instruments, was planned to be closed down and demolished. This outcry reached not only scientists and entrepreneurs in Göttingen and the surrounding area, but also those who were operating on a global scale, but had connections with the University of Göttingen and the historical Earthquake Station.
The way from the outcry to saving the Earthquake Station was not an easy one; sometimes it was tricky, but ultimately successful. For many years now, several thousands of visitors, guests of the city, families as well as teachers and students have enjoyed the historical facility and the informative facts that are always presented in a vivid and easy-to-understand manner.
The association
The association “Wiechert’sche Erdbebenwarte Göttingen e.V.” (WEG e.V.) was established in Göttingen on 11/04/2005. The association’s main objective is to ensure the scientific operation and the scientific support of the Earthquake Station Göttingen and the nearby historical research institutions as well as their opening to the public.
The wide-ranging tasks taken on by the association can only be accomplished if enough people are found to support it by taking action and/or providing funding. Therefore, the association appreciates every new member.
